Social media has massively adopted an ad-based business model, which led to:
- Algocracy, users trapped in their bubbles of interests
- Polarization, violence and hate speech
- Censorship, threat to freedom of expression
- Top-down dictatorship, users counting for nothing
- Users’ data exploitation for platforms’ profits
- Loss of trust in social media
- Frustrating user experiences
1) How to create a new social network model, without data or attention harvesting and without censorship?
2) How to enable users to exchange freely, in a constructive manner, outside of filter bubbles?
On Republike, the power is truly given back to the users, from A to Z. The only intangible DNA is shaped in the 8 Core Founding Principles of which the 1st one, « Mindset over Content » is the cornerstone. These 8 pillars are the foundation of the Constitution.
To ensure that all users are aware of that, we included the Constitution in the onboarding process, before profile building. Users pass through Founding Principles and « Swear the Oath », one principle at a time.
Republike wants to support community building and social interaction between users. Thus, a reward system has been created, both between peers and from the platform, based on quality of content, involvement in platform improvement and DAO etc.
In terms of design, it involved some specific journeys to make users reward each other with the dedicated Aureus currency and to show the amount each user owns, as a testimony of its implication within Republike.
Based on the Constitution, Republike aims at becoming a truly user-owned and user-governed platform. A new moderation system has been created, where users are asked whether or not a content fits with Republike principles.
Each time a content is reported, 7 users receive a notification to evaluate it. They decide if a Republike principle has been overpassed (or not) and receive some Aureus for their help.
Filter bubbles is one of today’s social medias worst consequences. Powered by big data, platforms are now locking users into virtual spaces ruled by recommendation algorithms. Republike wants to give back the control to its users.
The « Discover » feed has been specifically created to show content which is far from users interests and opinions. We also designed a feed personalization tool, where users can combine variables to build the feed they want and save it.
Content is a social media main leverage argument. If you don’t find interesting content, you don’t use it. For Republike, interesting content is the one that stimulates debate, confront points of view and inform users.
The objective here was to allow users to exchange ideas while keeping a clear view on comments structure and order. That is why we designed an architecture with content and interactions at the forefront.
